Si alguna vez te preguntas que es lo que mas extra\u00f1a un emigrante colombiano el estar fuera de casa siempre te dir\u00e1, primeramente, que se extra\u00f1a la familia. Pero adem\u00e1s de la familia, la navidad es una de esas fechas que tambi\u00e9n cala fuerte en el coraz\u00f3n de los emigrantes colombianos, especialmente si no est\u00e1n residiendo en un pa\u00eds latino. Digo\u2026Al menos en los pa\u00edses latinos la cercan\u00eda entre vecinos y colegas se siente muy similar a nuestro pa\u00eds.<\/p>

Pero bueno, esta ser\u00e1 mi primera noche de velitas en un pa\u00eds en el hemisferio norte, considerado de primer mundo y para estas fechas… \u00a1MUY FR\u00cdO!<\/p>

Hablo de Canad\u00e1, m\u00e1s espec\u00edficamente un pueblo de no mas de 90.000 personas al norte de Quebec llamado Chicoutimi. Como muchos colombianos vine por una beca de estudios, aplicando lo que aprend\u00ed en los grupos de investigaci\u00f3n de mi universidad. Y por esos azares de la vida. Soy el \u00fanico colombiano en la universidad.<\/p>

\u00a0A ninguno de mis amigos latinoamericanos les emocion\u00f3 la idea de encender velitas de noche y adem\u00e1s el escuchar algunos vallenatos mientras comemos alguno que otro bu\u00f1uelo. Eso s\u00ed, la mezcla para preparar bu\u00f1uelos que traje de mi \u00faltimo viaje a Colombia a\u00fan no se ha echado a perder.<\/p>

Pero bueno, ac\u00e1 estoy en mi pensi\u00f3n de estudiantes, mirando a trav\u00e9s de la ventana mientras espero que llegue el soldador del pueblo a solucionar la rotura de un tubo en la pensi\u00f3n que de no ser arreglada antes de que oscurezca tendremos que salir de la casa. Para hacer mi noche a\u00fan m\u00e1s interesante, el pron\u00f3stico de tiempo indica que habr\u00e1 nevada hoy\u2026 por cierto, si alguna vez a\u00f1oras pasar una navidad con nieve\u2026Olv\u00eddala. En las pel\u00edculas de navidad no te explican que una nevada significa quedarte encerrado en tu casa y no hacer nada m\u00e1s que comer y dormir.<\/p>

Mientras transcurr\u00eda la noche, s\u00f3lo pod\u00eda recordar algunos flashbacks de mi casa en donde los vecinos nos llevaban natilla a cambio de los deliciosos tamales que lograba conseguir mi padre del mercado central, que ahora que lo pienso, creo que mi pap\u00e1 gastaba mas de lo que recib\u00eda, sin embargo, como el mismo dijo: Si usted va a regalar algo no espere nada a cambio, h\u00e1galo por gusto, o bueno\u2026 tal vez la vida de estudiante me ha dado la habilidad de ahorrar lo m\u00e1ximo posible, pues en mi cabeza aun gasto en pesos.<\/p>

Regres\u00e9 a mi pensamiento de querer encender velitas y convidar a alguno de mis amigos europeos de la casa. La mayor\u00eda desisti\u00f3 por no profesar el catolicismo e incluso algunos me tildaron de aburrido, solo una chica de Espa\u00f1a me coment\u00f3 que le gustar\u00eda acompa\u00f1arme pero que desistiera de mi cruzada nost\u00e1lgica debido al material de la casa, la cual estaba totalmente construida en madera lo que ocasionar\u00eda un incendio, en caso de no controlar la llama de las velas. Tambi\u00e9n estaba el tema de los detectores de humo, los cuales al activarse har\u00edan pasar una mala tarde a todos mis compa\u00f1eros extranjeros de la pensi\u00f3n. As\u00ed que de esta manera mi ilusi\u00f3n de encender velitas estaba pr\u00e1cticamente enterrada.<\/p>

Esper\u00e9 alrededor de 2 horas en la sala de la pensi\u00f3n la llegada del soldador. Que, nuevamente pensando, el hecho de que estuviera sentado esperando al soldador me hizo pensar que, al ser el \u00fanico latino de la casa, todos me vieron como el indicado para recibirlo. Bueno no quiero sobre pensar.<\/p>

El soldador lleg\u00f3 disculp\u00e1ndose por la tardanza, algo cl\u00e1sico en el mundo latino. Me pregunt\u00f3 en donde quedaba la caldera principal, lo acompa\u00f1\u00e9 al s\u00f3tano donde se encontraba todo el mando central y muy r\u00e1pidamente abri\u00f3 la puerta de la misma. Por lo concentrado que estaba en darle las indicaciones de la mejor manera, hab\u00eda olvidado que \u00e9l era colombiano. No recuerdo muy bien su acento, pero si recuerdo que toda frase la terminaba con la palabra \u201cVeci\u201d. Le dije:<\/p>

\u00bfOiga hermano, usted va a prender velitas hoy?<\/p>

El hombre ri\u00e9ndose mientras aplicaba un poco de soldadura a una fuga, me respondi\u00f3:<\/p>

Hombre por el clima no puedo afuera, dentro de la casa se me quema por el material, entonces yo lo que hago es prender estas lamparitas y tomarme una cerveza. Ahora que lo pregunta tengo un poquito de natilla en una coca que me mand\u00f3 mi esposa, si quiere prendemos una de las lamparitas y comemos un poco para que se le pase la nostalgia.<\/p>

Mi alegr\u00eda volvi\u00f3 a aparecer, y sin pensarlo le dije: Av\u00edseme cuando termine y vamos a comerla afuera que yo pongo las cervezas.<\/p>

El hombre tard\u00f3 10 minutos mas en soldar los tubos, y le pagu\u00e9 con el dinero que hab\u00edamos recogido para el mantenimiento y nos dirigimos hacia el frente de la casa donde hab\u00eda un peque\u00f1o port\u00f3n en madera.<\/p>

El soldador saco una peque\u00f1a coca y cort\u00f3 por la mitad la natilla que ten\u00eda una forma cuadrada, mientras yo le daba una cerveza en la mano. El hombre saco de su maleta, una peque\u00f1a lampara en forma de vela no mas grande que una palma de la mano. Y antes de agradecerle por el detalle de la natilla, le pregunte si pod\u00eda colocar una canci\u00f3n mientras nos tom\u00e1bamos la cerveza.<\/p>

El soldador solo me dijo: h\u00e1gale, si puede poner algo de navidad de una, eso si no ponga nada triste que mi trabajo todav\u00eda no acaba.<\/p>

Puse las cuatro fiestas de Diomedes D\u00edaz, una tradici\u00f3n en mi regi\u00f3n de la costa, donde se prenden velitas en la madrugada, lo que da origen a la temporada navide\u00f1a.<\/p>

Y as\u00ed, a -10 grados con cerveza al clima\u2026\u00f3sea \u00a1helada!, escuchando Diomedes D\u00edaz mientras ve\u00edamos una peque\u00f1a lamparita en forma de vela, pude combatir un poco la nostalgia.<\/p>

Me desped\u00ed del soldador d\u00e1ndole las gracias y dese\u00e1ndole un feliz d\u00eda de las velitas a \u00e9l y a su familia e inmediatamente ingres\u00e9 a mi casa.<\/p>

En el frio exterior a esa temperatura tu cuerpo aguanta por mucho 15 minutos, as\u00ed que fue un momento bastante r\u00e1pido.<\/p>

Ya dentro de mi casa mi amiga espa\u00f1ola solo se re\u00eda y me dec\u00eda: Co\u00f1o\u2026s\u00ed para prender velas en la calle tenias que ingerir alcohol y colocar m\u00fasica, \u00a1pues me hubieses dicho! \u00a0Yo pens\u00e9 que buscabas gente para rezar un rosario en la calle.<\/p>

If you ever wonder what a Colombian emigrant misses the most while being away from home, they will always tell you that, first and foremost, they miss their family. But besides the family, Christmas is one of those dates that also deeply touches the hearts of Colombian emigrants, especially if they are not living in a Latin country. I mean\u2026 At least in Latin countries, the closeness between neighbors and colleagues feels very similar to our country.<\/p>

But well, this will be my first night of “candles” in a country in the northern hemisphere, considered first world and for these dates… VERY COLD! I’m talking about Canada, more specifically a town of no more than 90,000 people north of Quebec called Chicoutimi. Like many Colombians, I came here on a study scholarship, applying what I learned in my university’s research groups. And by those quirks of fate, I am the only Colombian at the university.<\/p>

None of my Latin American friends were excited about the idea of lighting candles at night and also listening to some vallenatos while eating a few bu\u00f1uelos. However, the mix to prepare bu\u00f1uelos that I brought from my last trip to Colombia has not yet gone bad.<\/p>

But well, here I am in my student dorm, looking out the window while waiting for the town welder to fix a pipe break in the dorm that, if not repaired before dark, will force us to leave the house. To make my night even more interesting, the weather forecast indicates there will be snowfall today… by the way, if you ever yearn to spend a Christmas with snow\u2026 Forget it. Christmas movies don’t explain that a snowfall means staying locked in your house and doing nothing but eating and sleeping.<\/p>

As the night went on, I could only remember some flashbacks of my house where the neighbors would bring us natilla in exchange for the delicious tamales that my father managed to get from the central market. Now that I think about it, I believe my dad spent more than he received. However, as he himself said: “If you are going to give something, do not expect anything in return, do it for pleasure.” Or well\u2026 maybe the student life has given me the ability to save as much as possible since in my head I still spend in pesos.<\/p>

I returned to my thought of wanting to light candles and inviting some of my European friends from the house. Most of them declined because they did not practice Catholicism, and some even called me boring. Only a girl from Spain commented that she would like to join me but suggested I give up my nostalgic crusade due to the material of the house, which was entirely built of wood and could cause a fire if the candles’ flames were not controlled. There was also the issue of the smoke detectors, which would trigger and ruin the afternoon for all my foreign dormmates. So, in this way, my illusion of lighting candles was practically buried.<\/p>

I waited around 2 hours in the dorm’s living room for the welder to arrive. Again, thinking about it, the fact that I was sitting waiting for the welder made me think that, being the only Latino in the house, everyone saw me as the right person to receive him. Well, I don’t want to overthink.<\/p>

The welder arrived apologizing for the delay, something classic in the Latin world. He asked me where the main boiler was, and I accompanied him to the basement where the central command was. Very quickly, he opened the door. Being so focused on giving him the directions in the best way, I had forgotten that he was Colombian. I don’t remember his accent very well, but I do remember that he ended every sentence with the word “Veci.” I said to him:<\/p>

“Hey brother, are you going to light candles today?”<\/p>

The man, laughing while applying some welding to a leak, replied:<\/p>

“Man, because of the weather, I can’t do it outside. Inside the house, it will burn due to the material, so what I do is light these little lamps and have a beer. Now that you mention it, I have a bit of natilla in a container that my wife sent me. If you want, we can light one of the lamps and eat a little to relieve your nostalgia.”<\/p>

My joy reappeared, and without thinking, I said: “Let me know when you finish, and we’ll eat it outside; I’ll bring the beers.”<\/p>

The man took 10 more minutes to weld the pipes, and I paid him with the money we had collected for the maintenance. We headed to the front of the house, where there was a small wooden gate.<\/p>

The welder took out a small container and cut the natilla, which was in a square shape, in half while I handed him a beer. The man took a small lamp shaped like a candle, no bigger than a palm, out of his bag. And before thanking him for the natilla, I asked if I could play a song while we had the beer.<\/p>

The welder just said: “Go ahead, if you can play something Christmas-related, great. Just don’t play anything sad; my work isn’t finished yet.”<\/p>

I played “Las Cuatro Fiestas” by Diomedes D\u00edaz, a tradition in my coastal region, where candles are lit at dawn, marking the beginning of the Christmas season.<\/p>

And so, at -10 degrees, with a room-temperature beer\u2026 I mean, frozen! Listening to Diomedes D\u00edaz while watching a small candle-shaped lamp, I was able to combat the nostalgia a bit.<\/p>

I said goodbye to the welder, thanking him and wishing him and his family a happy “Day of the Candles,” and immediately entered my house.<\/p>

In the cold outside at that temperature, your body can withstand only about 15 minutes, so it was a very quick moment.<\/p>

Back in my house, my Spanish friend just laughed and said: “Damn\u2026 if to light candles in the street you had to drink alcohol and play music, you should have told me! I thought you were looking for people to pray a rosary in the street.”<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
