Estamos en 2023, a\u00f1o electivo. Un a\u00f1o en el que muchos candidatos inundar\u00e1n las calles con sus publicidades de campa\u00f1a y donde veremos im\u00e1genes editadas mostrando lo id\u00edlico de s\u00ed mismos.<\/p>

Esta peque\u00f1a historia podr\u00eda pasar en cualquier rinc\u00f3n del pa\u00eds, ya que incluye nuestros rasgos caracter\u00edsticos en cada elecci\u00f3n: escoger la cara y no las ideas.<\/p>

As\u00ed, con esta peque\u00f1a introducci\u00f3n, comenzamos la historia en un peque\u00f1o pueblo de la regi\u00f3n andina, donde el domingo se realizar\u00eda el \u00faltimo debate frente a la iglesia del pueblo para presentar las propuestas de cada candidato.<\/p>

Es una elecci\u00f3n at\u00edpica debido al reducido n\u00famero de aspirantes; en este caso, dos candidatos.<\/p>

Por un lado, estaba el hijo del mayor comerciante del pueblo: Carlos. Un muchacho de 25 a\u00f1os que hab\u00eda iniciado sus estudios en Derecho, pero decidi\u00f3 dejarlo debido a sus problemas con el alcohol, ya que esto le gener\u00f3 constantes faltas de asistencia a clases.<\/p>

Carlos, de un gran carisma, pero con algo de ego, era el favorito de las elecciones. Ten\u00eda el m\u00fasculo financiero ideal para crear una campa\u00f1a medi\u00e1tica que le permitiera ganar f\u00e1cilmente sin necesidad de disponer de un buen plan de gobierno.<\/p>

En la otra orilla se encontraba Johana, una arquitecta de profesi\u00f3n de unos 35 a\u00f1os que hab\u00eda dejado el pueblo hace 15 a\u00f1os para estudiar su actual carrera profesional; regres\u00f3 hace 7 para radicarse definitivamente en el pueblo.<\/p>

Johana trabajaba en remoto para una empresa canadiense dedicada a la construcci\u00f3n de casas prefabricadas y se encontraba actualmente estudiando un posgrado en v\u00edas y construcci\u00f3n civil. Para ella, el principal problema del pueblo consist\u00eda en la baja calidad de las v\u00edas con las que contaban. Al ser un pueblo de la zona andina, para llegar all\u00ed se deb\u00edan bordear varias monta\u00f1as, lo que practicante lo convert\u00eda en un circuito de rally extremo.<\/p>

Los dos contrincantes se conoc\u00edan desde el colegio ya que Johana fue escogida como la representante escolar venciendo a Camilo Orduz, un joven de car\u00e1cter jovial que prometi\u00f3 una piscina para el colegio. Johana lo desminti\u00f3 simplemente explic\u00e1ndoles que, en el mejor de los casos, una obra civil demorar\u00eda m\u00e1s de dos a\u00f1os en concretarse para un colegio p\u00fablico, y que el colegio no contaba con los recursos suficientes para financiarla.<\/p>

Camilo renunci\u00f3 luego de escuchar el argumento de Johana, pues en el fondo no quer\u00eda ganar ni ser representante del colegio. Su \u00fanica motivaci\u00f3n era saltarse algunas clases con la excusa de tener reuniones.<\/p>

Para Johana, Carlos era un buen muchacho que ten\u00eda mucho potencial ya que contaba con el carisma adecuado para impactar positivamente, pero sent\u00eda que le faltaba a\u00fan preparaci\u00f3n para afrontar el cargo.<\/p>

Como en todo pueblo, la semana transcurri\u00f3 lentamente. Las personas realizaron sus actividades diarias y as\u00ed, a paso cansino y muy lento, llegamos al domingo.<\/p>

El debate estaba previsto para las 7:00 p.m. Antes de la hora, todo el pueblo se reuni\u00f3 en la tradicional misa de domingo de las 6:00 p.m.<\/p>

En la iglesia abarrotada, los candidatos se encontraban en la primera fila. Se sent\u00edan murmullos de ansiedad por parte de todos los presentes en la iglesia. El padre intuy\u00f3 este ambiente y, a manera de r\u00e9cord del pueblo, esta ser\u00eda la eucarist\u00eda m\u00e1s corta de la que se tenga registro. El padre simplemente agiliz\u00f3 lo que m\u00e1s pudo su tarea para comenzar el debate.<\/p>

\u00a1La mesa se colocar\u00eda frente a la iglesia y ser\u00eda moderada\u2026 por el mismo sacerdote!<\/p>

Luego de la bendici\u00f3n final, todos los presentes se dirigieron al frente de la iglesia expectantes del debate que estaba pr\u00f3ximo a iniciar.<\/p>

Carlos lleg\u00f3 primero. Se present\u00f3 con una camiseta de color fluorescente, unas gafas negras y grandes accesorios en sus mu\u00f1ecas. Con una gran ovaci\u00f3n, fue recibido por los asistentes. Para nadie era un secreto que era el favorito a ganar, su carisma era impresionante y para muchos en el pueblo, Carlos era a lo que muchos aspiraban: tener dinero\u2026<\/p>

Johana lleg\u00f3 con un traje bastante elegante de color blanco, jeans negros y unos tenis blancos, su outfit denotaba una mujer profesional y moderna.<\/p>

Una vez dispuestos los candidatos en sus lugares, el padre comenz\u00f3 con las preguntas:<\/p>

\u201cBuenas noches, queridos candidatos, como pueden observar, todo el pueblo se encuentra aqu\u00ed y me encantar\u00eda que me explicaran brevemente: \u00bfcu\u00e1l ser\u00e1 la bandera de su gobierno y de qu\u00e9 manera ustedes puedan ayudar a mejorar lo que el pueblo necesita?\u201d<\/p>

Johana inici\u00f3 su intervenci\u00f3n: \u201cbuenas noches, querido pueblo. Quiero decirles que agradezco el poder estar aqu\u00ed con ustedes y tener la oportunidad de darles a conocer mi propuesta para mejorar las v\u00edas de acceso a nuestro hogar. Creo que nuestro municipio se encuentra en una crisis de v\u00edas y esto ha llevado a que no podamos generar m\u00e1s dinero para el pueblo, al no contar con la infraestructura id\u00f3nea para mejorar los tiempos de entrega desde aqu\u00ed hacia la capital del departamento. Considero que si mejoramos las v\u00edas seremos mucho m\u00e1s conocidos, m\u00e1s pr\u00f3speros y tendremos mucho m\u00e1s turismo que aumente nuestra calidad de vida y, sobre todo, podremos darle oportunidad y empleo a los j\u00f3venes del pueblo que quieran quedarse y trabajar por un mejor lugar. Muchas gracias\u201d.<\/p>

Una parte del pueblo aplaudi\u00f3 la propuesta de Johana, pero, en su mayor\u00eda, se qued\u00f3 en silencio esperando la propuesta del candidato Carlos.<\/p>

\u201cBueno candidato, es su turno ahora. \u00bfQu\u00e9 considera usted que necesita el pueblo?\u201d, pregunt\u00f3 el sacerdote.<\/p>

\u201cBuenas noches, mi querido y amado municipio. A ustedes los llevo tanto en el coraz\u00f3n, que desde que me fui, siempre so\u00f1\u00e9 con estar en esta plaza vi\u00e9ndolos a los ojos y no prometi\u00e9ndoles, sino confirm\u00e1ndoles lo que voy a hacer\u201d, sentenci\u00f3 Carlos.<\/p>

\u201cEste pueblo que me ha dado tanto y al que siempre que salgo menciono con gran orgullo, merece todo, y por esa raz\u00f3n, yo se los dar\u00e9. A ustedes no les faltar\u00e1 nada y de mi parte siempre tendr\u00e1n un amigo al cual recurrir cuando lo necesiten. Quiero cerrar mi intervenci\u00f3n dici\u00e9ndoles: conmigo no necesitar\u00e1n nada porque tendr\u00e1n todo. Muchas gracias\u201d.<\/p>

Una vez terminada la intervenci\u00f3n de Carlos, la plaza entera vitore\u00f3 con gran algarab\u00eda, el ruido ensordecedor hizo levantar al sacerdote moderador para pedir algo de silencio.<\/p>

Johana, con un poco de sorpresa, levant\u00f3 la mano pidiendo permiso al moderador para refutar el mensaje de Carlos. El sacerdote le concedi\u00f3 el permiso con la condici\u00f3n de que fuera breve y respetuosa.<\/p>

Johana acept\u00f3 y con un tono cort\u00e9s, le dijo: \u201cdisculpe candidato, pero siento que en su intervenci\u00f3n no dijo nada. Ser\u00eda bueno que explicara realmente qu\u00e9 tiene su plan de gobierno\u201d.<\/p>

Carlos le respondi\u00f3 de una manera algo retadora diciendo: \u201ct\u00edpico de las personas que no ven m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de lo literal. Yo pr\u00e1cticamente dije todo mi plan de gobierno, solo que no tienes la visi\u00f3n de verlo realizado\u201d.<\/p>

\u201cUUUUHHHHHHH\u201d, se escuch\u00f3 en el fondo de la muchedumbre.<\/p>

\u201cS\u00ed, querido pueblo, d\u00e9jenme contarles una an\u00e9cdota corta. Cuando yo era ni\u00f1o, Johana fue la representante del colegio y en su gesti\u00f3n evit\u00f3 que nuestra amada instituci\u00f3n tuviera piscina, \u00bfse imaginan, queridos paisanos, los atletas que nos perdimos por la poca visi\u00f3n de la candidata?\u201d, intervino Carlos.<\/p>

\u201cYo s\u00ed creo que entre ustedes estar\u00eda un gran nadador ol\u00edmpico, pero la mezquindad de la candidata no lo permiti\u00f3, as\u00ed que no cometan el mismo error. Crean en m\u00ed. \u00a0\u00a1Un hombre visionario! Nuestro plan de gobierno lo iremos montando con el paso del tiempo, sin afanes ni egos\u201d, concluy\u00f3.<\/p>

\u201cPerd\u00f3n, pero uno no viene a aprender y menos a enga\u00f1ar a la gente\u201d, refut\u00f3 Johana.<\/p>

Un gran chiflido se escuch\u00f3 en la multitud y Johana entendi\u00f3 que el rechazo generalizado a sus propuestas le anunciaban una derrota el d\u00eda de las elecciones.<\/p>

Con algo de orgullo y estoicismo, se levant\u00f3 y les dijo con gran determinaci\u00f3n:<\/p>

\u201c\u00a1\u00a1Pueblo!! Yo tengo las mejores intenciones y el conocimiento para mejorar el municipio, s\u00e9 que ustedes no me van a elegir, por lo que veo, pero quiero decirles y aprovechando que est\u00e1 el candidato Carlos aqu\u00ed presente, que arreglen la v\u00eda de acceso al pueblo, solo me interesa mejorarlo, no el poder. Por favor no permitan que el olvido permanezca en nuestro acceso\u201d.<\/p>

Johana, muy acongojada, se retir\u00f3 del debate, dejando servida en bandeja de plata la alcald\u00eda del municipio.<\/p>

Y as\u00ed, con toda la euforia del debate a\u00fan a flor de piel, lleg\u00f3 el d\u00eda de las elecciones y para nadie era una sorpresa que Carlos ser\u00eda el ganador. Con un resultado de 3.500 votos contra 6, Carlos fue elegido alcalde del municipio.<\/p>

Mientras tanto, Johana decidi\u00f3 tomarse un tiempo fuera del pueblo para evitar malos comentarios y hostigamientos por parte de los efusivos ganadores de la contienda.<\/p>

El tiempo transcurrir\u00eda y con el pasar del mismo tambi\u00e9n el mandato de Carlos.<\/p>

El pueblo caer\u00eda en una especie de congelamiento. Carlos fue conocido como un alcalde disperso. Se dec\u00eda que solo iba una vez por semana a la alcald\u00eda y siempre portaba gafas negras dentro de su despacho.<\/p>

Los programas sociales eran inexistentes y solo se ver\u00eda un aumento en el presupuesto en un \u00edtem muy, muy particular. Carlos, en un momento de miedo por el aumento de las cr\u00edticas a su mandato, decidi\u00f3 subsidiar a la mitad el precio de la cerveza en el pueblo, creando as\u00ed un desajuste en programas importantes como la alimentaci\u00f3n escolar de los ni\u00f1os del municipio.<\/p>

El pueblo viv\u00eda en un estado de aletargamiento ya que se sent\u00edan solos y con la sensaci\u00f3n de haber perdido tantos a\u00f1os en alguien que no dio la talla para el cargo que manejaba.<\/p>

Johana aparecer\u00eda dos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s pavimentando un tramo de la carretera.<\/p>

Ella escogi\u00f3 dentro de los 58 kil\u00f3metros que los separaban de la capital del departamento, la zona con m\u00e1s baches de la dif\u00edcil v\u00eda. Exactamente 6 kil\u00f3metros. Y lo hizo colocando una valla que ser\u00eda un eco para todos en el pueblo y les dar\u00eda una lecci\u00f3n para futuras elecciones.<\/p>

As\u00ed que, si van a dicho municipio, no se les olvide recordar a los 6 votantes de Johana, los 6 kil\u00f3metros pavimentados y la frase que despide este cuento tomada textualmente de la valla:<\/p>

\u201cAqu\u00ed usted puede ver lo que seis personas con visi\u00f3n creyeron que se har\u00eda\u2026 \u00a1\u00a1y se hizo!!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

2023. A year in which many candidates will flood the streets with their campaign advertisements, and where we will see edited images showing the idyllic side of themselves.<\/p>

This small story could happen in any corner of the country, as it includes our characteristic traits in every election: choosing the face and not the ideas.<\/p>

So, with this brief introduction, we begin the story in a small town in the Andean region, where the last debate before the church would take place on Sunday to present the proposals of each candidate.<\/p>

It is an atypical election due to the small number of contenders; in this case, two candidates.<\/p>

On one side, there was the son of the town’s major trader: Carlos. A 25-year-old who had started his studies in Law but decided to drop out due to alcohol-related issues, leading to frequent class absences.<\/p>

Carlos, with great charisma but a hint of ego, was the favorite of the elections. He had the ideal financial muscle to create a media campaign that would allow him to win easily without the need for a solid governance plan.<\/p>

On the other side was Johana, a 35-year-old architect who had left the town 15 years ago to study her current profession and returned 7 years ago to settle permanently.<\/p>

Johana worked remotely for a Canadian company dedicated to prefabricated house construction and was currently studying a postgraduate degree in roads and civil construction. For her, the main problem of the town was the low quality of its roads. Being a town in the Andean region, reaching there required navigating several mountains, practically turning it into an extreme rally circuit.<\/p>

The two contenders knew each other since school, as Johana was chosen as the school representative, defeating Camilo Orduz, a jovial young man who promised a pool for the school. Johana simply denied it by explaining that, in the best-case scenario, a civil project would take more than two years to materialize for a public school, and the school did not have sufficient resources to fund it.<\/p>

Camilo resigned after hearing Johana’s argument because, deep down, he didn’t want to win or be the school representative. His only motivation was to skip some classes with the excuse of having meetings.<\/p>

For Johana, Carlos was a good young man with a lot of potential, but she felt that he still lacked preparation to take on the position.<\/p>

Like in any town, the week passed slowly. People went about their daily activities, and thus, slowly and steadily, we arrived at Sunday.<\/p>

The debate was scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Before that time, the entire town gathered at the traditional Sunday mass at 6:00 p.m.<\/p>

In the crowded church, the candidates were in the front row. There were murmurs of anxiety from everyone present in the church. Sensing this atmosphere, the priest, as a town record, declared this would be the shortest mass on record. He hurried through his tasks to start the debate.<\/p>

The table would be set up in front of the church and would be moderated… by the priest himself!<\/p>

After the final blessing, everyone present moved to the front of the church in anticipation of the impending debate.<\/p>

Carlos arrived first. He presented himself wearing a fluorescent-colored shirt, black sunglasses, and large wrist accessories. He was received with a great ovation by the attendees. It was no secret that he was the favorite to win; his charisma was impressive, and for many in the town, Carlos represented what many aspired to have: money.<\/p>

Johana arrived in a quite elegant white suit, black jeans, and white sneakers. Her outfit reflected a professional and modern woman.<\/p>

Once the candidates were in their places, the priest began with the questions:<\/p>

“Good evening, dear candidates. As you can see, the entire town is here, and I would love for you to briefly explain: what will be the flag of your government, and how can you help improve what the town needs?”<\/p>

Johana began her intervention: “Good evening, dear people. I want to thank you for allowing me to be here with you and having the opportunity to share my proposal to improve our roads. I believe that our municipality is facing a crisis of roads, and this has led us to be unable to generate more income for the town, as we lack the proper infrastructure to improve delivery times from here to the department’s capital. I think that by improving the roads, we will be much better known, more prosperous, and will attract more tourism, increasing our quality of life. Moreover, we can provide opportunities and employment to the young people of the town who want to stay and work for a better place. Thank you very much.”<\/p>

A part of the town applauded Johana’s proposal, but for the most part, it remained silent, waiting for candidate Carlos’s proposal.<\/p>

“Well, candidate, it’s your turn now. What do you think the town needs?” asked the priest.<\/p>

“Good evening, my dear and beloved municipality. I carry you so close to my heart that since I left, I always dreamed of being in this square, looking you in the eyes, and not promising but confirming what I am going to do,” Carlos declared.<\/p>

“This town that has given me so much, and to which I always proudly refer, deserves everything, and for that reason, I will give it to you. You will lack nothing, and from my part, you will always have a friend to turn to when you need it. I want to conclude my intervention by telling you: with me, you will need nothing because you will have everything. Thank you very much.”<\/p>

Once Carlos’s intervention ended, the entire square cheered with great jubilation. The deafening noise prompted the moderating priest to ask for some silence.<\/p>

Johana, somewhat surprised, raised her hand, asking for permission from the moderator to refute Carlos’s message. The priest granted her permission with the condition that it be brief and respectful.<\/p>

Johana accepted and, in a courteous tone, said, “Excuse me, candidate, but I feel that in your intervention, you said nothing. It would be good if you explained what your government plan actually entails.”<\/p>

Carlos responded somewhat challengingly, saying, “Typical of people who don’t see beyond the literal. I practically laid out my entire government plan; you just lack the vision to see it realized.”<\/p>

“BOOOOOO,” was heard from the back of the crowd.<\/p>

“Yes, dear people, let me tell you a short anecdote. When I was a child, Johana was the school representative, and during her term, she prevented our beloved institution from having a pool. Can you imagine, dear fellow citizens, the athletes we missed out on due to the candidate’s lack of vision?” Carlos intervened.<\/p>

“I do believe that among you, there would be a great Olympic swimmer, but the candidate’s selfishness did not allow it, so don’t make the same mistake. Believe in me. A visionary man! We will gradually implement our government plan, without haste or egos,” he concluded.<\/p>

“Sorry, but one does not come to learn, and certainly not to deceive people,” refuted Johana.<\/p>

A loud boo echoed in the crowd, and Johana understood that the widespread rejection of her proposals signaled her defeat on election day.<\/p>

With some pride and stoicism, she stood up and told them with great determination:<\/p>

“Town!! I have the best intentions and the knowledge to improve the municipality. I know you won’t choose me, from what I see, but I want to tell you, and taking advantage of the fact that Carlos, the candidate, is here, to fix the access road to the town. I’m only interested in improving it, not in power. Please don’t let neglect linger on our access.”<\/p>

Johana, very disheartened, withdrew from the debate, leaving the mayoralty of the municipality served on a silver platter.<\/p>

And so, with all the excitement of the debate still fresh, election day arrived, and it was no surprise to anyone that Carlos would be the winner. With a result of 3,500 votes against 6, Carlos was elected mayor of the municipality.<\/p>

Meanwhile, Johana decided to take some time away from the town to avoid negative comments and harassment from the exuberant winners of the contest.<\/p>

Time would pass, and with its passage, Carlos’s mandate would also come to an end.<\/p>

The town would fall into a kind of stagnation. Carlos was known as a scatterbrained mayor. It was said that he only went to the town hall once a week and always wore sunglasses in his office.<\/p>

Social programs were nonexistent, and there would only be an increase in the budget in a very, very particular item. Carlos, at a moment of fear due to the increasing criticism of his mandate, decided to subsidize half the price of beer in the town, creating a disruption in important programs like the school feeding for the children of the municipality.<\/p>

The town lived in a state of lethargy as they felt alone and with the feeling of having wasted so many years on someone who did not live up to the position he held.<\/p>

Johana would reappear two years later, paving a section of the road.<\/p>

She chose, among the 58 kilometers that separated them from the department’s capital, the area with the most potholes on the challenging road. Exactly 6 kilometers. And she did it by placing a billboard that would be an echo for everyone in the town and would teach them a lesson for future elections.<\/p>

So, if you go to that municipality, don’t forget to remind the 6 voters of Johana, the 6 paved kilometers, and the phrase that concludes this story taken verbatim from the billboard:<\/p>
