Latinoam\u00e9rica es una regi\u00f3n de contrastes, de lugares con mucho dinero y, a su vez, de muchas carencias; de lugares extremadamente secos y de otros donde llueve durante todo el a\u00f1o.<\/p>

Pero, as\u00ed como tenemos contrastes, existe algo que nos une tambi\u00e9n como latinoamericanos, y son las situaciones surrealistas que pueden acontecer en cualquier esquina. Para saberlo, basta con estar atento a lo que el escenario nos muestra.<\/p>

Un ejemplo de esto \u00faltimo ocurri\u00f3 en una zona de la costa colombiana, donde sucedi\u00f3 algo que caus\u00f3 revuelo por lo absurda y por lo c\u00f3mica que fue la situaci\u00f3n\u2026 En el pueblo se le llam\u00f3: el asesino del tr\u00e1fico.<\/p>

La historia ocurri\u00f3 en noviembre, por la v\u00eda externa que conduce desde el peque\u00f1o pueblo de Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a hasta la ruta conocida como la salida al mar, que finaliza en la ciudad de Cartagena.<\/p>

En un tramo de la carretera de Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a, se construy\u00f3 un tope reductor de velocidad debido a los constantes accidentes de tr\u00e1nsito, y dado que all\u00ed, al pie de la v\u00eda, se ubica una peque\u00f1a iglesia.<\/p>

El alcalde del pueblo hab\u00eda ordenado construir un tope para que las personas tuvieran un poco m\u00e1s de precauci\u00f3n al momento de transitar por dicha v\u00eda, la cual es utilizada como cruce por un gran n\u00famero de personas, especialmente los domingos.<\/p>

Lo bizarro de la situaci\u00f3n comienza cuando, sobre las 04:00 a.m., un conductor en aparente estado de alicoramiento decide bajarse de su motocicleta y comienza a romper el tope ubicado frente a la iglesia con un pico met\u00e1lico que cargaba.<\/p>

A esa hora y en un pueblo tranquilo, era de esperar que no apareciera ni una sola alma. La \u00fanica persona que pas\u00f3 por ese lugar, aproximadamente dos horas despu\u00e9s de iniciada la tarea de destruir el tope, fue un joven turista suizo en una motocicleta alquilada, a quien le pareci\u00f3 muy curioso ver a un tipo solitario golpeando un polic\u00eda acostado mientras lanzaba insultos y continuaba \u201cd\u00e1ndole duro\u201d y con mucha disciplina a su enemigo de cemento.<\/p>

El joven continu\u00f3 su camino pensando en lo que acababa de ver, y en si era simplemente un espejismo ocurrido en un pa\u00eds surreal.<\/p>

El joven suizo, luego de 35 minutos, lleg\u00f3 a una peque\u00f1a estaci\u00f3n de gasolina, donde se dirigi\u00f3 tranquilamente hacia una peque\u00f1a nevera para comprar una botella de agua. All\u00ed, mientras tomaba su agua reci\u00e9n adquirida, de reojo vio como dos mec\u00e1nicos se re\u00edan frente a un peque\u00f1o televisor que presentaba las noticias de un canal regional. En dicho noticiero, se estaba hablando sobre la destrucci\u00f3n de una parte del famoso tope que hab\u00edan instalado d\u00edas atr\u00e1s para los habitantes del pueblo de Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a.<\/p>

La noticia hac\u00eda hincapi\u00e9 en que ahora quienes pasaban por dicha ruta, deb\u00edan darle una vuelta al tope da\u00f1ado y que esto ir\u00f3nicamente estaba retrasando m\u00e1s el camino, incluso m\u00e1s que con el tope en condiciones normales.<\/p>

\u201cOooh, I was there! One guy was destroying that in the morning\u201d, dijo el turista extranjero, alertando sobre lo que hab\u00eda visto hace unos minutos.<\/p>

Los mec\u00e1nicos, bastante sorprendidos, se miraron con gran confusi\u00f3n, pues no entend\u00edan el ingl\u00e9s. Uno de los mec\u00e1nicos, se\u00f1alando la pantalla, dijo: \u201c\u00bfEl polic\u00eda acostado?\u2026 \u00bfEso?\u201d<\/p>

El suizo, pensando que \u201cpolic\u00eda acostado\u201d significaba algo de tono humor\u00edstico, tal vez \u201cborracho\u201d, dijo: \u201cS\u00ed, ser eso\u201d.<\/p>

\u201cS\u00ed, polic\u00eda acostado, \u00bfentonces usted vio qui\u00e9nes le \u201ccascaron\u201d al polic\u00eda acostado?\u201d, replic\u00f3 uno de los mec\u00e1nicos.<\/p>

\u201cOk, \u2018cascaron polic\u00eda acostado\u2019. That\u2019s ok. Thanks\u201d. El suizo se fue feliz, pensando que hab\u00eda aprendido una expresi\u00f3n t\u00edpica colombiana para referirse a algo curioso que ves en televisi\u00f3n.<\/p>

Luego, el turista pag\u00f3 la tanqueada de su moto, se despidi\u00f3 de los mec\u00e1nicos confundidos, y se fue repitiendo en su mente la frase aprendida en la estaci\u00f3n de gasolina.<\/p>

Aproximadamente dos horas despu\u00e9s, el joven suizo decidi\u00f3 parar en un restaurante de carretera en un municipio cercano a Cartagena. All\u00ed, sentado en una esquina, vio un grupo de polic\u00edas con cara de preocupaci\u00f3n hablando sobre el accidente que le ocurri\u00f3 a uno de sus colegas:<\/p>

\u201cS\u00ed\u00ed\u00ed, a Ram\u00edrez, yendo por la v\u00eda al mar, un tipo le sali\u00f3 con un palo, fijo era para robarle el arma de dotaci\u00f3n. Pobre Ram\u00edrez, \u00a1yo s\u00ed le dije que no fuera solo! Ojal\u00e1 que reaccione r\u00e1pido, porque el golpe lo tiene un poco inconsciente en la cl\u00ednica. Afortunadamente est\u00e1 bien, seg\u00fan los m\u00e9dicos, solo es dejarlo en reposo. \u00a0Pero s\u00ed lo terminaron \u2018cascando\u2019, hombre\u201d, le coment\u00f3 uno de los uniformados a otro.<\/p>

El joven extranjero, como muchos europeos que llegan a Colombia, sent\u00eda que todas las personas siempre est\u00e1n felices. Decidi\u00f3 levantarse y entablar una charla con los polic\u00edas.\u00a0En su cabeza segu\u00eda pensando que \u201ccascaron al polic\u00eda acostado\u201d se refer\u00eda a una situaci\u00f3n divertida,<\/strong>\u00a0as\u00ed que fue a decirles r\u00e1pidamente:<\/p>

\u201cHello. I would like to try this new phrase with you (Hola. Me gustar\u00eda probar esta nueva frase con ustedes): \u2018cascaron un polic\u00eda\u2019\u201d\u2026 El joven olvid\u00f3 la palabra \u201cacostado\u201d, debido a la dificultad de su entonaci\u00f3n para un angloparlante o francoparlante.<\/p>

Los polic\u00edas se quedaron at\u00f3nitos y le preguntaron: \u201c\u00bfEn d\u00f3nde ocurri\u00f3?\u201d<\/p>

El hombre, sin entender nada de espa\u00f1ol, hizo se\u00f1as hacia su motocicleta. Uno de los polic\u00edas (que en sus ratos libres estaba aprendiendo ingles mediante una aplicaci\u00f3n), le dijo: \u201cWhere is the \u2018cascaron polic\u00eda\u2019?\u201d<\/p>

El suizo respondi\u00f3 algo confundido: \u201cPascual Pe\u00f1a, small town\u2026 Pueblito\u2026 Iglesia. Hombre azul, t-shirt (camiseta). Red motorcycle (moto roja) and (y)\u2026 One metal (un metal)\u2026 Palo\u2026 Estar\u2026 borracho\u2026 too (tambi\u00e9n)\u201d.<\/p>

El polic\u00eda decidi\u00f3 llamar a la estaci\u00f3n del pueblo de Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a, al haber entendido un poco el mensaje del extranjero. Dio la orden de buscar un tipo bajo, de camisa azul, con una motocicleta roja, una barra met\u00e1lica y en estado de alicoramiento. \u201cLo solicito por violencia contra servidor p\u00fablico\u201d, concluy\u00f3.<\/p>

La polic\u00eda le agradeci\u00f3 al suizo por su colaboraci\u00f3n y este se retir\u00f3 a su mesa muy contento, pensando que \u201ccascaron un polic\u00eda acostado\u201d continuaba siendo una gran expresi\u00f3n para romper el hielo.<\/p>

Luego de tres d\u00edas, el suizo decidi\u00f3 abandonar Colombia. En el aeropuerto, mientras ingresaba a la sala de espera, vio en un peri\u00f3dico regional la foto del sujeto que hab\u00eda visto hace tres d\u00edas golpeando un tope de carretera, y decidi\u00f3 llev\u00e1rselo como recuerdo del surrealismo colombiano y del hecho de haber aprendido una nueva expresi\u00f3n que, al menos para \u00e9l, resultaba muy \u00fatil utilizar en Colombia. Y as\u00ed se fue, con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja, feliz de su estancia en el pa\u00eds cafetero.<\/p>

La noticia del peri\u00f3dico indicaba:<\/p>

Gracias a la ayuda de un extranjero de origen europeo que se encontraba de mochilero, se dio oportuno aviso sobre la violencia ejecutada contra un servidor p\u00fablico. De inmediato las autoridades se dirigieron al peque\u00f1o corregimiento de Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a en donde, seg\u00fan testigos, los dos empleados de una estaci\u00f3n de gasolina confirmaron que un joven rubio extranjero les hab\u00eda indicado que hab\u00edan \u201ccascado\u201d o golpeado a un polic\u00eda.<\/em><\/p>

Luego de comprobar la veracidad de los hechos informados por los testigos, la polic\u00eda agarr\u00f3 a un hombre de aproximadamente 45 a\u00f1os en estado de alicoramiento, durmiendo bajo un \u00e1rbol en el parque principal. El hombre, al ser interrogado a\u00fan en estado de confusi\u00f3n, confirm\u00f3 que golpe\u00f3 con una pala un polic\u00eda acostado. La estaci\u00f3n del pueblo de Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a se comunic\u00f3 con el hospital general, donde se encontraba el polic\u00eda v\u00edctima del incidente un poco m\u00e1s consciente despu\u00e9s de la contusi\u00f3n generada por los golpes, y este indic\u00f3 que quienes lo hab\u00edan golpeado habr\u00edan sido un grupo de adolescentes en un barrio de un pueblo diferente al lugar en el que viv\u00eda el hombre capturado. Sin embargo, al confesar actos de vandalismo a la propiedad p\u00fablica, al capturado se le pregunt\u00f3: \u2018\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 destruy\u00f3 el polic\u00eda acostado?\u2019 El hombre dijo que antes, siempre que sal\u00eda de tomar cerveza, llegaba tranquilo a su casa, pero que desde que est\u00e1 el polic\u00eda acostado en la v\u00eda se ha accidentado tres fines de semana seguidos y que se cans\u00f3 de arreglar la moto por los golpes recibidos.<\/em><\/p>

Al sujeto le impusieron una multa, le aplicaron un comparendo y finalmente le decomisaron la moto bajo el compromiso de no volver a conducir borracho.<\/em><\/p>

As\u00ed se cerr\u00f3 el caso que por unos tres d\u00edas se encarg\u00f3 de llenar de memes y noticias c\u00f3micas los principales peri\u00f3dicos del pa\u00eds.<\/p>

Mientras tanto, quedar\u00e1 la duda de si el joven suizo alguna vez intentar\u00e1 traducir la noticia del peri\u00f3dico que compr\u00f3 y entender\u00e1 toda la situaci\u00f3n que gener\u00f3, o si simplemente seguir\u00e1 viviendo con la idea de que \u201ccascar un polic\u00eda acostado \u201c es una expresi\u00f3n amigable para romper el hielo.<\/p>

*Context: in Colombia, a speed bump is known as “polic\u00eda acostado,” literally translated as “lying police.” It can be much more curious, so to provide context to this story, if you see “lying police,” remember it’s a speed bump.<\/strong><\/p>

Latin America is a region of contrasts, with places of great wealth and, at the same time, many deficiencies; extremely dry areas and others where it rains all year round.<\/p>

But, just as we have contrasts, there is something that also unites us as Latin Americans, and that is the surreal situations that can happen on any corner. To know it, it’s enough to pay attention to what the scene shows us.<\/p>

An example of this occurred in a coastal area of Colombia, where something absurd and comical caused a stir\u2014the town called it: the traffic killer.<\/p>

The story happened in November, on the external road that leads from the small town of Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a to the route known as the sea exit, which ends in the city of Cartagena.<\/p>

On a stretch of the road in Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a, a speed bump was built due to constant traffic accidents, and since there is a small church at the foot of the road.<\/p>

The mayor of the town had ordered the construction of a speed bump so that people would exercise more caution when traveling on that road, which is used as a crossing by a large number of people, especially on Sundays.<\/p>

The bizarre part of the situation begins when, around 4:00 a.m., a seemingly intoxicated driver decides to get off his motorcycle and starts breaking the speed bump located in front of the church with a metal pickaxe he was carrying.<\/p>

At that hour and in a quiet town, it was expected that not a single soul would appear. The only person who passed through that place, about two hours after the task of destroying the speed bump began, was a young Swiss tourist on a rented motorcycle. It seemed very curious to him to see a solitary guy hitting a sleeping policeman while shouting insults and continuing to “hit hard” and with great discipline against his cement enemy.<\/p>

The young man continued on his way thinking about what he had just seen and whether it was simply a mirage that occurred in a surreal country.<\/p>

The Swiss young man, after 35 minutes, reached a small gas station, where he calmly headed to a small fridge to buy a bottle of water. There, while drinking his newly acquired water, he saw two mechanics laughing in front of a small TV showing the news from a regional channel. In that news broadcast, they were talking about the destruction of a part of the famous speed bump they had installed a few days ago for the inhabitants of the town of Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a.<\/p>

The news emphasized that now those who passed through that route had to detour around the damaged speed bump, and ironically, this was delaying the journey even more than with the speed bump in normal conditions.<\/p>

“Oh, I was there! One guy was destroying that in the morning,” said the foreign tourist, alerting about what he had seen a few minutes ago.<\/p>

The mechanics, quite surprised, looked at each other in great confusion because they didn’t understand English. One of the mechanics, pointing to the screen, said, “The sleeping policeman?… That?”<\/p>

The Swiss, thinking that “sleeping policeman” meant something humorous, maybe “drunk,” said, “Yes, be that.”<\/p>

“Yes, sleeping policeman. So, did you see who ‘hit’ the sleeping policeman?” one of the mechanics replied.<\/p>

“Okay, ‘hit sleeping policeman.’ That’s okay. Thanks.” The Swiss happily left, thinking that he had learned a typical Colombian expression to refer to something amusing you see on television.<\/p>

Later, the foreign tourist paid for his motorcycle’s fuel, said goodbye to the confused mechanics, and left repeating in his mind the phrase he had learned at the gas station.<\/p>

About two hours later, the Swiss young man decided to stop at a roadside restaurant in a municipality near Cartagena. There, sitting in a corner, he saw a group of worried-looking police officers talking about the accident that happened to one of their colleagues:<\/p>

“Yeah, Ramirez, going to the seaside, a guy came out with a stick; for sure, it was to rob him of his service weapon. Poor Ramirez, I did tell him not to go alone! Hopefully, he reacts quickly because the blow has left him a bit unconscious in the clinic. Fortunately, he’s okay, according to the doctors, it’s just a matter of keeping him at rest. But they did ‘hit’ him, man,” one of the officers commented to another.<\/p>

The foreigner, like many Europeans who come to Colombia, felt that everyone was always happy. He decided to get up and have a chat with the police officers. Still thinking that “hit the sleeping policeman” referred to a funny situation, he quickly went to tell them:<\/p>

“Hello. I would like to try this new phrase with you: ‘hit a policeman.'” The young man forgot the word “sleeping” due to the difficulty of its pronunciation for an English or French speaker.<\/p>

The police officers were dumbfounded and asked him, “Where did it happen?”<\/p>

The man, not understanding any Spanish, gestured towards his motorcycle. One of the officers (who was learning English in his free time through an app) said, “Where is the ‘hit the policeman?'”<\/p>

The Swiss responded somewhat confused, “Pascual Pe\u00f1a, small town… Little town… Church. Blue man, T-shirt. Red motorcycle and… One metal… Stick… To be… drunk… too.”<\/p>

The officer decided to call the police station in the town of Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a, having understood a bit of the foreigner’s message. He ordered them to look for a short guy, in a blue shirt, with a red motorcycle, a metal bar, and intoxicated. “I request him for violence against a public servant,” he concluded.<\/p>

The police thanked the Swiss for his cooperation, and he went back to his table very content, thinking that “hit a sleeping policeman” continued to be a great expression to break the ice.<\/p>

After three days, the Swiss decided to leave Colombia. At the airport, as he entered the waiting area, he saw in a regional newspaper the photo of the guy he had seen three days ago hitting a roadside bump. He decided to take it as a souvenir of Colombian surrealism and the fact that he had learned a new expression that, at least for him, proved very useful to use in Colombia. And so he left, with a big smile, happy about his stay in the coffee country.<\/p>

The newspaper headline read:<\/p>

Thanks to the help of a European backpacker, timely notice was given about the violence executed against a public servant. Immediately, the authorities went to the small hamlet of Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a, where, according to witnesses, two employees of a gas station confirmed that a blond foreign young man had indicated to them that they had “hit” or struck a policeman.<\/p>

After verifying the veracity of the facts reported by the witnesses, the police caught a man of approximately 45 years old in an intoxicated state, sleeping under a tree in the main park. The man, when questioned while still confused, confirmed that he hit a sleeping policeman with a shovel. The station in the town of Don Pascual Pe\u00f1a contacted the general hospital, where the police victim of the incident was a bit more conscious after the contusion caused by the blows. He indicated that those who had hit him were a group of teenagers in a neighborhood in a different town than where the captured man lived. However, confessing acts of vandalism against public property, the arrested man was asked, ‘Why did you destroy the sleeping policeman?’ The man said that before, whenever he came home after drinking beer, he arrived safely, but since the sleeping policeman was on the road, he had had accidents three weekends in a row, and he was tired of fixing the motorcycle due to the blows received.<\/p>

The man was fined, given a citation, and his motorcycle was finally confiscated with the commitment not to drive drunk again.<\/p>

So, the case that filled the country’s main newspapers with memes and funny news for about three days was closed.<\/p>

Meanwhile, the question remains of whether the Swiss young man will ever try to translate the newspaper article he bought and understand the whole situation it generated, or if he will simply continue living with the idea that “hitting a sleeping policeman” is a friendly expression to break the ice.<\/p>
